Saint John's Day, or Sant Joan in Catalan - on the evening and night of 23 to 24 June 2024.
Sant Joan is an emblematic festival in Barcelona celebrated on the night of 23 to 24 June, marking the summer solstice. Although its origins are uncertain, the festival is deeply rooted in Catalan culture and is even a public holiday in the region. In the past, Franco's regime tried to suppress it, but celebrations continued clandestinely.
The evening is marked by festive meals featuring coca de Sant Joan, a sweet cake topped with candied fruit, and cava. Fire plays a central role in the festivities, symbolising purification and protection from evil spirits. Bonfires are lit all over the city, and tradition dictates that the Canigó flame, lit in the Pyrenees, is used to ignite these fires.
Firecrackers and fireworks add a spectacular touch to the night, with children playing with fireworks and teenagers having fun with firecrackers. Popular beliefs associate the night with fantastic creatures and medicinal herbs blessed at midnight, believed to bring good luck.
The festivities take place all over the city, with the beaches a favourite spot for night-time festivities, creating a magical and joyous atmosphere that is unique in its kind.
