Barcelona LEZ: rules for foreign vehicles
Bringing a UK-registered or another foreign-registered car to Barcelona? The low emission zone (ZBE) has access restrictions on weekdays. Your vehicle must meet the environmental criteria and be registered with the AMB before you drive during restricted hours. Can your foreign-registered vehicle enter the LEZ?
Two conditions must be distinguished: your vehicle must be eligible and its registration must be validated. A newer car is not exempt from this process just because of its age.
What Euro standards need to be met?
For long-term access, vehicles must meet the following AMB requirements:
- Petrol car, category M1: Euro 3 or higher.
- Diesel car, category M1: Euro 4 or higher.
- Electric car: allowed, with registration for a foreign plate.
- Motorcycle or moped, category L: Euro 2 or higher.
- Van, category N1: electric, petrol Euro 3 or higher, or diesel Euro 4 or higher.
Check the category, fuel type, and standard on your documents. The year of first registration alone is not enough to confirm eligibility.
Do I need an emissions sticker?
For a UK-registered or another foreign-registered vehicle, the essential step is registration with the AMB. No physical ZBE sticker is sent for you to display on the windscreen. A sticker issued by another country does not replace this registration.
A car hired in Spain may have Spanish registration plates and follow the DGT classification system instead. Check the actual vehicle with the hire company.
How do I register a foreign vehicle?
Use the official AMB form in English. Select the vehicle’s country of registration, then choose environmental verification for long-term access or occasional access for specific days.
- Prepare the supporting documents. For the standard process, the documents must show the holder, registration, vehicle category, fuel type, and Euro standard. Ensure you have clear copies, with no information cut off.
- Open the official form. Enter the vehicle and applicant details, then attach the required documents for the chosen process. If the standard is not listed in your documents, consult the AMB procedure before submitting an incomplete application.
- Pay the applicable fees. Environmental verification and daily permits are separate procedures, with different fees.
- Check the decision. A submission, payment, or acknowledgement does not replace the confirmation of authorisation. Keep all correspondence and verify the result before driving in the area during the specified hours.
Start registration on the official form.
To find your application, use the AMB user area. If your document or situation does not match the displayed options, consult the instructions for foreign vehicles instead of choosing a category that does not fit.
How long does registration take?
The announced timeframe for standard registration is a maximum of 15 working days. This is not a promise of validation within 24 hours. Submit your application as soon as your trip is planned.
You have already submitted a standard application
Until the authorisation is confirmed, do not consider the vehicle as registered. Check if any documents are missing and follow the messages from the registry. A hotel reservation, paid parking, or a vehicle meeting the standards does not replace the decision of the AMB.
You need to drive before the process is complete
The official form provides for a occasional-access procedure for foreign vehicles, presented as an immediate procedure allowing you to request up to 24 days of driving per year. Choose this procedure if it suits your circumstances, then complete the formalities and payment corresponding to the chosen days.
Important to remember: "Immediate procedure" does not mean that your standard request automatically becomes an authorisation. Check your file for the vehicle, dates, and permits actually granted before travelling.
How much do registration and daily permits cost?
The fee depends on the type of application. These are the amounts shown on the AMB website when checked; confirm the applicable fee before paying.

Barcelona LEZ map: which areas are covered?
The LEZ is not limited to the historic centre: it covers almost the entire city of Barcelona. It also extends to the neighbouring municipalities of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Sant Adrià de Besòs, as well as parts of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat.
To find out if your hotel or parking is located within the LEZ, search its exact address on the official interactive map of the AMB. Also check the streets you will need to take to get there: a route on the ring roads may end with an entry into the regulated zone.
Can you cross Barcelona without entering the LEZ?
Yes, you can cross Barcelona without entering the LEZ by taking the ring roads known as "rondas": the Ronda de Dalt (B20) and the Ronda Litoral (B10).
Be cautious with exits: the carriageways of the ring roads are excluded from restrictions, but an exit towards the centre or your hotel may lead you into the LEZ. Therefore, check the route to your destination: if you enter the zone during regulated hours, your vehicle must be authorised to circulate there.
And what about reaching Barcelona-El Prat Airport?
Yes, you can reach Barcelona-El Prat Airport from the north of Barcelona by taking the rondas, without entering the LEZ. Plan a route that stays on these roads and then follows the airport access roads, without detouring through the city centre. Check the complete route to your terminal before you leave.
When do Barcelona’s LEZ restrictions apply?
Ordinary restrictions apply on weekdays from Monday to Friday, from 7 AM to 8 PM. Outside these hours, the ordinary restrictions of this LEZ do not apply; other traffic and parking rules remain in effect.

Public Holidays in Barcelona
The usual LEZ restrictions do not apply on public holidays. Below are the official dates left in 2026 and those of 2027, to help you plan your trip.
- Tuesday 8 December: Immaculate Conception.
- Friday 25 December: Christmas Day.
- Saturday 26 December: St Stephen’s Day.
Saturday 26 December falls on a weekend anyway, when the LEZ restrictions do not apply.
- Friday, January 1: New Year's Day.
- Wednesday, January 6: Epiphany.
- Friday, March 26: Good Friday.
- Monday, March 29: Easter Monday.
- Saturday, May 1: Labor Day.
- Monday, May 17: Whit Monday (local holiday in Barcelona).
- Thursday, June 24: Saint John's Day.
- Saturday, September 11: National Day of Catalonia.
- Friday, September 24: La Mercè (local holiday in Barcelona).
- Tuesday, October 12: National Day of Spain.
- Monday, November 1: All Saints' Day.
- Monday, December 6: Constitution Day.

- Saturday, December 25: Christmas.
Dates that fall on a Saturday already benefit from the weekend schedule. Local holidays apply to the city of Barcelona: check the calendar of the area you are passing through if your journey takes you elsewhere in the metropolis.
Where can I park without a LEZ permit?
Without a ZBE permit, choose a parking spot outside the zone, then reach your accommodation using public transport. Here are the points to check before booking:

- Check the exact address: locate the parking entrance on the official ZBE map.
- Check the route to the parking: you must be able to reach it without crossing the ZBE during regulated hours. Be cautious of exits from ring roads and routes suggested by GPS.
- Plan the rest of your journey: check available transport options near the parking to reach your hotel. Consult our Barcelona metro guide.
- Check the parking conditions: access hours, maximum height, and permitted parking duration for your entire stay, especially if leaving the car for several nights.
Booking a parking spot does not grant the right to enter the ZBE. This rule also applies to your hotel's parking if it is located within the zone.
How is the LEZ enforced, and what are the fines?
The AMB indicates that a compliant foreign vehicle that is not registered can be fined starting from €200. Meeting Euro standards is not enough if the necessary registration formalities have not been completed.
Checks are based on the vehicle’s registration number. Keep the authorisation confirmation and ensure that the entered number matches exactly with the vehicle used. An authorisation granted for another car does not automatically cover yours.
Check the official rules on affected vehicles and follow the procedure indicated in any notification received. Do not assume that a registration completed after the trip erases a earlier offence.

Yes. UK-registered vehicles use the AMB procedure for foreign registration plates. The vehicle must meet the environmental requirements and have the relevant authorisation. What matters is the vehicle’s country of registration, not the driver’s nationality.
Check the approval category and fuel type on the vehicle documents. The name "motorhome" or the interior layout is not enough to determine the applicable requirements. Have your situation confirmed by the registry if the category proposed in the form does not clearly match your documents.
The AMB states that registration remains valid as long as the conditions are unchanged and the vehicle has not been deregistered. Before another visit, check your application, vehicle details and current rules. This is separate from permits for individual days.
