America's Cup 2024 Barcelona

37th America's Cup August 2024!

The next edition of the America's Cup will take place in 2024 from August to October in Barcelona, Spain. The 2024 edition is the 37th in the history of the competition and will see the best sailors and sailing teams from around the world compete. Spain is no stranger to the America's Cup, having hosted the 32nd edition in Valencia in 2007. That edition was won by the Swiss team Alinghi, which beat the American defender, Oracle Team USA, in a series of races held in February 2007.  Barcelona was chosen as the venue for the competition because of its modern harbour and world-class sailing facilities, as well as its generally favourable climate for sailing from August to October. The team defending its title in 2024 is Emirates Team New Zealand.

What is America's Cup?

America's Cup is the oldest international sporting competition in the world. The race is named after the American yacht "America" which won the first edition of the competition in 1851. America's Cup is considered the pinnacle of professional sailing, like the "Formula 1 of sailing". A race, coveted by sailors from all over the world, where high technology and advanced tactics compete to maximise the speed of the boats.

Where to see the 2024 America's Cup Race? The Fanzones

America Cup 2024 fanzone

In front of the dark blue race area in this image, five fanzones will be set up, four of which will be on Barcelona Beaches. The fifth fan zone is located in America's Cup village, just opposite the INEOS Britannia and Alinghi Red Bull Racing camps. Giant screens will be installed in all five fanzones to follow the races and all the other stages of the event.

America's Cup 2024 free fanzones

Admission to the fan zones will be free during the competition. These fanzones are ideally located for following the ocean race. Giant screens allow you to follow the action as closely as possible, with explanations from specialists that are very useful for understanding all the subtleties of navigation and the strategies of the different crews. America's Cup races are often accompanied by numerous activities and events organized in the fanzones.

2024 America's Cup rules and boat types

The rules of the Race are determined by the Yacht Club that holds the trophy - in 2024 Emirates Team New Zealand - in collaboration with the participating teams. The rules may vary from one edition to another, but some basic rules are generally respected:

> Type of boat: Competing teams must compete in America's Cup Class rigid hull monohulls, which are high-tech, high-performance racing yachts designed to strict standards to ensure fair racing conditions.

> Number of Races: The race series is conducted in several rounds, with the number of races to be determined in advance by the organisers.

> Race course: Races take place on a specific course, usually in the shape of a triangle or coastal course, with a line start and a finish at the demarcation mark. The course can be modified according to the weather conditions.

> Challenges : The trophy holder: Emirates Team New Zealand, also known as the 'defender', must accept challenges from competing teams to determine the challenger for the next edition of the Cup.

> Refereeing: Referees monitor the races to ensure that the rules are followed. Penalties may be imposed on teams that break the rules, including time or lap penalties.

In terms of boat types, the 2024 edition of the America's Cup will be raced in AC75 class monohulls, which are 23-metre long high performance yachts equipped with foils to maximise speed and handling. But also by AC40s for two other "Youth & Women" competitions and by LEQ12s for tests.

Major architectural works by 2014

Port Vell and the Olympic Port of Barcelona are already undergoing a transformation in preparation for the great competition that will be the America's Cup. As with the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona is being transformed once again.

The Olympic Port has begun a long transformation that will end in the summer of 2024.

A new marina will be built with a brand new Olympic Port with a refined and luminous architecture that is even more oriented towards the sea and more ecological. On the agenda: a 24,000 square metre space, 11 restaurants, gourmet areas, a new Moll de Gregal with a great new design.

Over the next few months, the Old Port of Barcelona will receive more than 86 million euros of public and private investment for 17 new architectural projects, including an elevated promenade to be built on the Llevant pier and a belvedere.

See you in 2024!
