The Ebro Delta covers 320 square kilometres and is the second largest wetland area in the western Mediterranean, after the French Camargue.
It has many natural habitats not common to the rest of Catalonia: large lakes of salt water (such as La Tancada) or fresh water (such as L'Encanyissada), kilometres of beaches with sand dunes (El Fangar) and salt wastelands (Erms de la Tancada, Punta de la Banya), places where underground fresh water comes to the surface (Els Ullals), shallow bays (El Fangar or Els Alfacs), riverbank woods and fluvial islands that, together with the ecosystems created by man - rice fields and salt pans - constitute a unique landscape of great natural wealth.
This diversity of ecosystems and flora and fauna has led to the protection of a large part of the Delta and in 1983 it was declared a "natural park". It is in fact an ornithological paradise where you can see more than 300 species of birds.
Deltebre is the Capital City of the Delta del Ebro.
First there were two cities: Jesus y Maria and La cava which melt together to form just one town: Deltebre. Here you will find The Park information centre, Ulldecona 22. Tel: 977 48 96 79. All year round you will be able to do activities like nature itineraries, routes and excursions, horse riding, bike riding, canoeing, boats...
Useful addresses:
Olmos Unio, 165. Tel: 977 48 10 26. Garriga Verge del Carme, 40. Tel: 977 48 91 22.
Agriculture makes up one of the Delta's most important economic bases, with a clear predomination in rice-growing - almost 21,000 ha of rice paddies produce 98% of the rice grown in Catalonia - followed by vegetable crops and fruits. The agricultural cooperatives play an important role in the Delta, in particular the Rice-growers' Associations (Cambre Arrosera de Deltebre).
El Cadell is a good restaurant to taste the fishing of the day and an El Xapadillo with Delta rice. The Port is situated on the left side of the river.
The Buda Isle is the Delta's ecologic reserve. A little paradise where live 300 species of aquatic birds. A part of the isle can be visited if the rules are followed. Delta Guia organizes guided visits that last around 1h30
Poble Nou del Delta is a little town was created in the 20th Century to make the farmers meet here to develop the agriculture in the deserted land. You will see white houses in rods full of palm trees. 12 km North of Sant Carles.
Long and desert sandy beaches, with dunes and other samples of vegetation are a must to be seen.
Almost the whole coastline of "la Costa del Delta" belongs to a Natural Park. Only one or two of the beaches (for example the beach Riumar) has got tourist services like bars, showers, waste bins, rescue services etc. The other beaches have a natural atmosphere.
Riu i Platja de Migjorn: The Migjorn river is an old opening of the Ebro that surrounds l'Illa by Buddha (the island of Buddha) during 3.5 km finishing to the beach. The area is an accessible zone by car from San Jauma (town nearby)
Llacuna de la Tancada: It has an extension of 312 ha, visiting this area by car or bicycle is recommendable. Flamingos and different species of ducks are frequently seen in the lagoon
