El Born Barcelona

El Born sightseeing tour

El Born Barcelona

Famous for its cobbled streets, El Born is a small village within the city. Trendy yet very authentic. Luthiers, glassmakers, shoemakers, and hip designers coexist here. Retirees play cards, young people chat by the fountains. Festive atmosphere, especially in the evening. Don’t hesitate to wander into the dark alleys to breathe in the old Barcelona. Steeped in history and a witness to the commercial prosperity of the 13th century, El Born (also known as La Ribera) forms, along with the Gothic Quarter, the historic old town of Barcelona.

History of El Born

El Born developed around the Santa Maria del Mar church. It was formed in sandy areas called Vilanova de la Mar starting in the 13th century. In medieval times, the Passeig del Born was the site of tournaments and jousts, hence its name, “born”, referring to the enclosure where medieval knights' tournaments and jousts took place.
The neighborhood was initially inhabited by sailors, porters, dockworkers, and laborers. It wasn't until the 13th century that merchants began building more noble houses. El Born was included within the city walls of Barcelona in 1438, during the expansion of the wall.

El Born today

El Born is one of the most charming and popular neighborhoods in Barcelona for tourists. A bit less so for its residents, who continue to protest against the ever-growing influx of visitors. Nonetheless, coexistence works quite well.

Here are a few points of interest we particularly enjoy:

The Picasso Museum – A must-see in both the neighborhood and the city. Constantly expanding, it now occupies several 13th-century Gothic buildings. Excellent temporary exhibitions for the most visited museum by locals in Barcelona! The Santa Caterina Market for its colorful architecture and quality products. While not a competitor to the Boqueria, it’s definitely worth discovering. The Santa Maria del Mar church – considered one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. The beautiful Ciutadella Park, located just outside El Born, is perfect for a stroll or picnic and also houses the Barcelona Zoo.
