A Bit of History

Domènech i Montaner and the Former Hospital de Sant Pau

The Sant Pau Modernist Complex was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the great architects of Catalan modernism. The project aimed to create a modern hospital, organized in pavilions, with light, air, gardens, and a special focus on the well-being of patients.

Today, the former hospital has become a cultural site open to visitors. It offers a chance to explore another facet of Barcelona's modernism, different from Gaudí but equally essential.

UNESCO

Why is Sant Pau a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The former Hospital de Sant Pau has been a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Palau de la Música Catalana since 1997. This designation acknowledges the exceptional importance of Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the modernist architecture of Barcelona.

Sant Pau is remarkable for its pavilion layout, gardens, ceramic decorations, stained glass, sculptures, and social ambition.
