A Bit of History
Manuel Vicens, Gaudí and the First House
Casa Vicens was commissioned by Manuel Vicens i Montaner, a stockbroker and agent, to serve as a summer residence in the Gràcia neighborhood.
At the time, Gràcia was not yet the integrated neighborhood of Barcelona we know today. It was a more peaceful area, ideal for holiday homes.
Gaudí was only 31 years old when he received this commission. He was still at the beginning of his career, yet he already demonstrated great freedom. He combined oriental influences, local materials, ceramics, brick, wrought iron, and botanical references with remarkable confidence.
Manuel Vicens was connected to the world of ceramics, which explains the significance of tiles in the house's decoration. Gaudí turned this constraint into a strength: the ceramics became one of the most visible and memorable features of Casa Vicens.
The house was completed in 1885. It remained a private residence for a long time before being restored and transformed into a museum. Since 2017, Casa Vicens has become one of the most interesting places to discover the young Gaudí.
