Don't just pass through the square. Plaça del Rei truly comes to life when you visit the MUHBA.

On the surface, you see medieval Barcelona; a few meters below, you walk through the streets of Roman Barcino. It's probably one of the best places in the city to understand how Barcelona was built layer by layer.

Visit the MUHBA Plaça del Rei

The entrance to the Museu d’Història de Barcelona – MUHBA is located directly on the square.

The tour descends into a vast underground archaeological complex where Roman streets, sections of the wall, and ancient workshops are preserved, including a dyeing workshop and facilities related to food production.

The route then leads to several spaces of the medieval palace, including the Saló del Tinell and the Santa Àgata chapel.

Power and History

The Palau Reial Major

Plaça del Rei was part of the grand complex of the Palau Reial Major, the center of comital and later royal power in medieval Barcelona.

The palace was transformed several times between the Middle Ages and the modern era. A significant part of the complex has disappeared, while the preserved buildings still allow us to trace several centuries of architectural evolution.

The silhouette of the Mirador del Rei Martí, visible above the Tinell, is now one of the most recognizable features of the square.

A Square Shaped by Centuries

History of the Plaça del Rei

The current space has gradually been organized around the medieval royal palace.

The Palau Reial Major has ancient origins, but its dominant Gothic appearance mainly dates from the transformations carried out between the 13th and 15th centuries. The Santa Àgata chapel dates from the 14th century, while the Palau del Lloctinent was added in the 16th century.

The current appearance of the square is also the result of 20th-century works. The Casa Padellàs, now connected to the MUHBA, was notably moved stone by stone to Plaça del Rei in the 1930s.
