Family Fun
The Magic Fountain with Children
Children love the Magic Fountain: the water jets, colors and music catch their attention from the very first minutes. A choreography lasts about 15 to 20 minutes, a length well suited to young children.
The show is free and needs no booking, so you can leave at any time if the children get tired, without losing anything.
Timing is the main thing to plan. In winter, the first shows start at 8 PM, which is still reasonable with young children. In summer, they start at 9:30 PM: aim for the first show and have dinner beforehand.
On busy evenings, the crowd is dense around the pool. With toddlers, the steps of the Palau Nacional or Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina give you more space and a clear view of the whole show.
Pick the first show. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to settle in calmly, then head back right after: Espanya metro station is a few minutes’ walk away.
A Bit of History
The Magic Fountain Since 1929
The Magic Fountain was designed by the Catalan engineer Carles Buïgas for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.
It was part of the major developments carried out between Plaça d’Espanya and the Palau Nacional to transform Montjuïc for the exposition.
The idea was particularly innovative: to use the movements of water and light to create a true urban spectacle.
Over the decades, music and new lighting technologies have been added to the setup.
Since 1929. The Magic Fountain remains one of the most visible legacies of the International Exposition that profoundly transformed Montjuïc.
