Don't make the trip solely for this market: instead, enjoy a visit to the Gothic Quarter or the cathedral and stop by while you're there.

It's a delightful stop if you love browsing, with enough variety to find a curiosity or a small vintage souvenir without spending hours at the flea market.

Why Go

Why Visit the Mercat Gòtic?

The Mercat Gòtic is not a vast flea market like the Encants. Its appeal lies in the opposite: a small selection of antique dealers in an exceptional setting, right in the heart of old Barcelona.

The professional exhibitors cover a wide range of specialties: decorative art, religious objects, numismatics, old books and papers, silverware, jewelry, watches, toys, dolls, cameras, records, vintage items, and specialized collections.

You can visit just to browse or to search for a specific piece.

To Discover

What Can You Buy at the Mercat Gòtic?

The market combines antiques, vintage items, and collectibles. You can find jewelry, watches, coins and medals, old books, postcards, engravings, silverware, glassware, cameras, toys, and decorative objects.

Since the stalls are run by professionals, the selection is generally more specialized than a simple flea market.

If you love antique markets, the Mercat Gòtic is particularly interesting for taking the time to look at small items, old documents, and objects that are easy to bring back in your luggage.

The History of the Mercat Gòtic

The Mercat Gòtic has been set up in front of the cathedral for several decades. The market association traces its origins back to 1977, making it one of the most established antique markets in Barcelona today.

Over the years, it has specialized in antiques, collectibles, and curiosities, with a permanent group of professionals.

Its location greatly contributes to its identity: the Plaça Nova was already one of the entrances to the ancient Roman city of Barcino, near the old Roman gate and aqueduct.

An Exceptional Setting

The Mercat Gòtic and the Cathedral of Barcelona

The market takes place on Avinguda de la Catedral and Plaça Nova, right in front of the Barcelona Cathedral.

This is probably the best way to include it in a visit: explore the cathedral, stroll through the stalls, then continue your walk through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter.

Just a few steps away, you'll also find the remains of ancient Barcino, the Casa de l’Ardiaca, Plaça del Rei, and Carrer del Bisbe.
