Don't come all the way from the other side of Barcelona just for this fair: its real charm lies in combining it with the Sagrada Família. Visit the basilica in the late afternoon, then explore the stalls as the lights come on.

It's also a great market if you're looking for a more local and less grandiose Christmas atmosphere than the Fira de Santa Llúcia.

Its main advantage is undoubtedly its location. The stalls are set up in the garden and around the square, with the towers of the Sagrada Família as a backdrop.

However, the fair also maintains a true neighborhood function: locals come here to buy their Christmas tree, holiday plants, nativity scene figures, or a few gifts before the festivities. Created in the 1960s, it has become the traditional Christmas market of the Eixample.

What Can You Buy at the Fira de Nadal?

The fair is traditionally divided into several categories of stands: Christmas trees and plants, nativity scenes and decorations, food, and gifts.

It's a great place to discover some Catalan traditions: nativity figurines, caganers, handcrafted decorations, and seasonal products. Unlike La Boqueria or Santa Caterina, this is not a food market, but a place to prepare for Christmas.

The fair first appeared in the early 1960s. It grew particularly when merchants and artisans could no longer find enough space at the traditional Fira de Santa Llúcia in front of the cathedral and set up near the Sagrada Família.

More than sixty years later, it has become one of the most well-known Christmas events in Barcelona and the traditional Christmas market of the Eixample district.

The combination is obvious: the fair is located right at the foot of the Sagrada Família. Visiting the basilica followed by a stroll through the stands is probably the best way to enjoy this market.
