The capital of Alt Empordá is Figueres, known world-wide for being the site of the Dalí Theatre Museum...
This region is situated at the Northeastern most corner of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Costa Brava begins, with small coastal towns like Portbou and Colera. The capital, Figueres, is known world-wide for being the site of the Dalí Theatre Museum, one of Spain's most frequently visited museums, which houses a great deal of the painter's works. From here, one can embark on a journey covering the life of Salvador Dalí, including a visit to the Púbol castle (in the Baix Empordà region) and to his home in Portlligat, in Cadaqués.
The Alt Empordà region also boasts natural areas of great environmental interest. The Aiguamolls de I'Empordà Natural Park, situated between the towns of Castelló d'Empúries, Empuriabrava (a residential area that provides a wide range of leisure offerings and where the Mediterranean's biggest residential marina is located) and Sant Pere Pescador, concentrates a large number of autochthonous flora and fauna species.
El Port de La Selva is a little natural port with fishermen white houses. A little path goes besides the coast and takes you to the Faro de S'Armella in Cap de Creus.
Try the shellfish and the specialty of the place: Llagosta a la Catalana (Lobster prepared in a Catalan way) and langostinos al chocolate (shrimp with chocolate).
The architectural complex of Sant Pere de Rodes, declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO, is formed by a Benedictine monastery that, like the church, dates from the 1Oth century, as well as a belfry and defensive tower that were added on in the 12th century. From here you will enjoy a beautiful view of the Pyrenees and Cap de Creus.
Lies to the north of Figueres and used to be the capital of the County of Peralada, it has a well-kept park, a library and a very valuable art collection. Part of the castle has been turned into a casino and a place for an International Music Festival
Recommendation: Don't leave town without tasting the Peralada Wine. Choose a Blanco Pescador, a Cresta Rosa or a Tinto Cazador.
As the capital of Alt Emporda, it is a busy commercial town, an important communication centre as well as Dali´s birthplace. There is an spectacular museum dedicated to him which is the meeting place of many visitors who come to the town.
Other interesting attractions in Figueres include the Catalonia Toy Museum, which displays all kinds of miniature toys made by the world's most prestigious toymakers, the Empordà Museum, whose collection ranges from archaeological finds from Empúries and Ullastret to 20th-century paintings by Vayreda, Tàpies or Cuixart, and the Museum of Naïf Art in El Far d'Empordà.
Cadaqués was discovered by painters, artists and intellectuals who chose it for a place of residence and has thus escaped the changes produced by crowded growth. It lies on the peninsula of Cape Creus, on one of the slopes looking out over the bay of Cadaques, and it is hard to know what is more surprising: whether it is the scenery, in shades of grey from the salty stones and of silvery green from the olive trees against the white of its houses and the endless horizon of the sea, or whether it is its personality, its attractive force. You can only get there through a long mountain route full of cars and sharp bends. The street that takes you to the sea is full of nice restaurants and hotels.
Very near Cadaques lays Portlligat, a small beach with transparent water where Salvador Dali had his residence. It is a very small port full of fisherman white houses.
The mansion of Salvador Dali and Gala (his wife) is a group of fishermen houses bought by the famous painter. It can be visited with a booked entrance in groups of eight people. The decoration is full of surprises with giant eggs in the roof and in the garden.

Roses is history and tourism at the same time. It stands on the site of Rhode, a Greek colony of the 9th Century. It has an excellent natural harbour where tourist development has been extraordinarily fast, based, to be sure, on the 4km beach of fine sand and the large size of the area, which includes a beautiful promenade today, a huge marina and many possibilities for entertainment.
Empuries has a very nice beach, which is dwarfed by the most important archaeological site in Spain, like the ruins of the Greek Paleopolis at Sant Marti d´Empuries, with the Neopolis, necropolis and the Roman Ruins as well as the museum of the excavations. The foundation of Empuries is ascribed to the Greeks who had settled at Marsseille in 550BC. A visit to the ruins shows the market, the agora, the holy area where the temples stood and the main one dedicated to Jupiter. Among a group of altars, the statue of Aesculapius was found, a reproduction of which can be seen. The museum shows reproductions of the most valuable finds, which are kept in Barcelona and Girona. The ruins of a Christian basilica and Visigoth sarcophagi are found in the harbour area. Of the Roman town, the southern wall, the amphitheatre and the arena are preserved as well as the ruins of a Roman villa.
L'Escala is the gateway to the gulf of Roses, from a geographical as well as a tourist point of view. This village, which is one of the main fishing harbours along the coast, is also an important tourist centre, combining the smell of salt water with the bustle of tourists who add a note of colour and joy to it. For them the village has a special attraction that are the trainyeros, typical boats which leave the harbour at night with their lamps lit to go fishing.
