A Bit of History
Casa Batlló: Gaudí Transforms an Existing House
Between 1904 and 1906, industrialist Josep Batlló entrusted Antoni Gaudí with the transformation of a building constructed a few decades earlier on Passeig de Gràcia. Instead of demolishing it, Gaudí chose to completely metamorphose it.
He redesigned the façade, enlarged the openings, reorganized the interior spaces, and rethought the light and ventilation around the central patio. He also transformed the attic and the roof, where organic shapes and sculptural chimneys appear, now part of the building's identity.
With Casa Batlló, Gaudí went far beyond a simple renovation of a bourgeois house. He created a total work of art where architecture, furniture, glass, ceramics, and ironwork all contribute to the same decor. The house became one of the masterpieces of Catalan modernism and one of the most iconic achievements of the architect.
