What to Expect
Barcelona’s skyline is unthinkable without its outstanding landmark, the Sagrada Família, just like a stay in the city is unthinkable without a visit to Gaudí’s most extraordinary masterpiece.

Construction of the architect’s very individualistic interpretation of a gothic church started in 1882 and is famous for its unusually long time of construction but, even more so, for its unparalleled design. 135 years after laying the first stone still unfinished, it impresses the visitor with its originality and wealth of form and detail, in which Gaudi harmoniously combined Christian iconography and naturalistic elements. The Nativity Facade, the first to be finished in 1930 and declared World Heritage in 2005, depicts the birth of Jesus and is richly decorated with scenes from nature. The 75 metre high columns in the basilica rise to the ceiling and branch out, resembling trees, and walking down the light-flooded central nave of the basilica evokes the sensation of strolling through a forest.

Although incomplete, the Sagrada Família is without a doubt Barcelona’s most popular tourist attraction and receives millions of visitors each year. In order to ensure a pleasant visit for everyone, the monument assigns timeslots, which should be reserved in advance. Your admission also includes a visit to the adjoining school and the museum. Gaudí’s former workshop, which has been turned into a visitor centre, documents the construction of the Sagrada Família with models, drawings and photographs on display.

How does it work?
When you book your entrance ticket, please select the date and  time you would like to visit.

The timeslot only fixes the time you enter the building. Once inside, you can stay as long as you want.

historic quarter with bars and restaurants

What to expect

Narrow side streets, hidden courtyards as well as majestic city palaces and open squares along with a dazzling array of bars and restaurants make up the charming atmosphere of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. So come with us on a walk through the old town, discover a vital part of the city’s history and follow your guide through the quarter’s labyrinthine alleys into the heart of Barcelona.

Together with the quarters Raval and Barceloneta, el Barrio Gótico makes up the old town of Barcelona, whose many historic buildings stem from the 14th and 15th century, the city’s heyday as a naval power. However, its origins go all the way back to Roman times under emperor Augustus. In the centre at Plaça Sant Jaume, where today Barcelona’s town hall and the Catalan government building stand proudly vis-à-vis, the Roman Forum once had its place and the quarter’s Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia was built on the remains of a Roman temple. Starting in the late 19th century, the Gothic quarter underwent massive restoration works and, just in time for the 1929 International Exhibition, regained its original splendour, which still attracts tourists and locals today.

Overview:

Visit Art Noveau Casa Amatller designed by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, just around the corner to Casa Batlló.

Take a video-guided tour through the museum with original pieces of furniture and art.

What to Expect:

Located at prestigious Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Amatller constitutes together with Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó-Morera, Barcelona’s so called ‘Manzana de la Discòrdia’ (bone of contention), a sign that the modernist buildings didn’t always find approval at the time of their construction. Today, the three Art Nouveau houses belong to Barcelona’s proud cultural heritage and attract thousands of visitors every year.

Commissioned by Antoni Amatller i Costa, a wealthy chocolatier and art collector, Casa Amatller was rebuilt between 1898 and 1900 by celebrated architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who turned it into one of the most remarkable showpieces of modernist architecture. The neo-classical building combines elements of Catalan modernism, like rich ornamentation, wrought iron works and stained glass windows, with influences of Dutch architecture. Great parts of the building’s ornaments refer to the history of the owner’s family and reflect his interests, like photography, travelling and art.

Between 2009 and 2014, Casa Amatller was restored according to original plans and invites you today to a tour around its museum. Its furnishings with original pieces and artwork as well as the informative video tour make it easy to imagine the life of the Amatller family in their residence in turn-of-the-century Barcelona.

The museums are closely located together which makes it possible to visit them all in one morning/afternoon!

At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century Casa Batllo, Casa Mila and Casa Vicens was build by the famous architecture Gaudi. Nowadays these buildings are icons in the city because they are so unique and creative.

Casa Batlló

The colourful Casa Batlló, a house from the 19th century renovated in the well-known modernist style, is one of many masterpieces of Gaudí in Barcelona. The interior of the house is just as exceptional as the exterior of the building. The building has become a famous landmark in Barcelona and is open to the public. The Casa Batlló was awarded the 2004 Europa Nostra Award for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005. Undoubtedly worth a visit.

Casa Mila

Casa Mila or 'La Pedrera' (meaning 'stone quarry' in Catalan) was built between 1905 and 1910 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage landmark in 1984. Casa Mila is one of the most remarkable works of Antoni Gaudí. The eccentric design is inspired by his love to nature. Along the exterior of the building, the irregular balconies give the impression of a series of waves. The upper floor, the attic and the extraordinary rooftop are open to visitors. Drawings, models, photographs and videos are used to portray the life of the great Gaudí, his historical and cultural context, and the artistic values and technical innovation of his work.

Casa Vicens

This is the hidden gem of Barcelona that every person should see. It recently opened and the architecture will blow you away. He totally invented a new style and a new start in his career.

What to Expect

After extensive works in 2017, has Casa Vicens been restored to its original splendor and takes its visitors back to Gaudí’s beginnings and the birth of Catalan modern architecture.

Commissioned by Manuel Vicens i Montaner, a wealthy stockbroker, Casa Vicens was built between 1883-85. Influenced by Neo-Mudéjar architecture, Gaudí designed the house in the upcoming art nouveau style, using vibrant colours and a variety of materials, such as iron, glass, ceramic tiles and concrete. In 1925 the house underwent renovations, in which the house and garden were extended and the entrance and main floor modified, still maintaining Gaudí’s original design.

Take a tour through Casa Vicens, which will bring you not only closer to understanding Gaudí’s architecture but also give you deeper insight into Barcelona’s history. Learn through an audiovisual presentation how urban planning changed the face of the city at the turn of the century and understand the social, cultural and artistic context, in which Casa Vicens was designed.

What to Expect

A wealth of forms, structures and decorative elements awaits the visitor and what better way to explore them, than on a tour led by an expert guide, who answers all your questions?

And details there are to discover many. Gaudi’s architecture is considered unique due to his very personal interpretation of Modernism and Art Nouveau, which gives thought to every minute part. His unparalleled style, inspired by his great passions architecture, nature and religion, combines functionality with aesthetic design as well as religious meaning, so many seemingly random elements fulfill not only an architectural purpose but are also full of significance. The columns in the central nave, for example, branch out like trees to support the weight of the vault and, at the same time, evoke the feeling of walking through a forest, which in turn symbolises the harmony of belief and nature and inspires introspection and prayer.

Built for the International Exhibition in 1929, the Spanish village reproduces the different architectural styles of fifteen regions of Spain and recreates an Iberian village with the typical central square and city hall, narrow streets and charming archways. Covering an area of 49,000 m² and situated at the foot of Montjuïc, the village became so popular during the International Exhibition, that it was conserved even after the event closed its doors and attracts today more than 1 million visitors every year.

‘El Poble Espanyol’ is a living museum with more than 20 workshops, where jewellery, musical instruments and toys are manufactured following traditional methods, and a popular venue for concerts, gastronomical festivals and craft workshops. Overview:

Former hospital designed by modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner

Compound of pavilions and park in modernist style of architecture

Part of the UNESCO world heritage since 1997

What to Expect:

In 2009, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau closed the doors of its modernist quarters and moved to a more modern building. Its long used facilities had become too small and outdated for modern medicine, the same reason that once prompted its construction. In four years of extensive restoration works, the former hospital buildings were given back their original splendour and reopened in 2014 as a cultural landmark, attracting visitors from all around the world due to its architectural as well as historical value.

Built between 1902 and 1930, the complex replaced the hospital’s 500-year-old housing in Barcelona’s Raval district and was the answer to the city’s rapid growth and advances in medicine. It combined state of the art technology with the splendour of modernist architecture, that even today has lost nothing of its appeal. The new buildings, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, were constructed according to the latest standards of hygiene without ignoring aesthetic aspects. Typical for modernist architecture, Santa Creu i Sant Pau is richly decorated with ornamental details like colourful mosaics, statues and stained glass windows, which refer to its history as well as religious context.

Today the former hospital has been given a new purpose as a centre of knowledge, housing amongst others, institutions of the United Nations and WHO. It hosts international seminars, congresses and meetings and has an active cultural programme. Its historical archive holds an outstanding collection of records, which documents more than 600 years of Catalan history.

Access the building’s spectacular rooftop terrace.

Discover the story of Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia, in an interactive experience.

What to Expect
Although Barcelona’s modernist Eixample is full of architectural highlights and visual surprises, the Casa de les Punxes still stands out. Its six pointed towers, which earned the building its name ‘House of Spikes’, remind the visitor of a medieval castle, which seems to be taken from a fairytale.

Its history sounds a bit like from a tale as well, which begins in 1905 when Bartomeu Terradas, a successful textile industrialist, commissioned renowned architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch to construct three houses for his sisters Angela, Josefa and Rosa. The architect joined the houses’ facades in such a way, that they look like one single building and used towers, sculptures and ironwork to give it its distinctive medieval feel.

After more than 100 years, the house was first opened to the public just very recently in 2016 and attracts thousands of visitors with its unusual design. But La Casa de les Punxes offers more than just architecture and design. A tour through the building gives you the chance to find out more about Catalonia’s patron saint Sant Jordi and step into a world of knights, princesses and dragons.

What to Expect
Casa Milà certainly stands out from the surrounding buildings on prestigious Passeig de Gràcia. Nothing less than revolutionary at the time of its construction, the building didn’t only have admirers and its crude, white facade inspired the inhabitants of Barcelona to its still popular nickname La Pedrera (The Quarry).

Constructed between 1906 and 1912, Antoni Gaudí designed the building as one continuous curve, refusing any straight lines. Its rounded interior walls are decorated with mural paintings of flowers and plants, naturalistic elements, which can be found throughout the house in its wrought ironwork, sculpted stone columns and even in its woodwork and furniture. The design of Casa Milà made use of innovative concepts, such as a self-supporting facade, a basement garage and the stunning roof-terrace. One of the most remarkable features of the building, the roof exemplifies the modernist idea of combining functionality and aesthetics, and skylights, staircase exits, ventilation towers, and chimneys are sculpted into artistic forms.

But what was controversial at the time is now one of Gaudí’s most famous works and top exponent of Catalan Modernism. Recognised in 1984 by the UNESCO as World Heritage, Casa Milà attracts thousands of visitors every year. With your skip the line ticket you’ll avoid these queues and get access to the main floor, courtyards and the spectacular roof-terrace. Learn more about Gaudí’s life and work in the interpretation centre and through the included audio guide.
